BPC-157

The most sold recovery peptide, and no receptor for it

What it actually is

BPC-157 is a lab-made chain of 15 amino acids, the small units that proteins are built from. Short chains like this are called peptides. It is sold as a powder in small glass bottles, mixed with liquid and injected, and it is the most popular healing compound in that market. It is described as a piece of a larger protein said to be in human stomach juice, but that parent protein has never had its makeup published and some researchers doubt it exists.

What it is supposed to do

In rats and in cells in dishes, it appears to encourage the growth of new blood vessels, make tendon cells more responsive to growth hormone, and interact with nitric oxide, a signal the body uses to control blood flow. Nobody has ever found its receptor, the physical docking point a drug has to latch onto in order to do anything at all. Thirty years in without one, the mechanism is not merely complicated, it is unresolved.

What people take it for

People take it for recovery from injury, mostly tendons, ligaments and joints, and for gut problems. That is what it is sold and talked about for, not what it has been shown to do, since no controlled trial in people has ever been completed.

The convention sits above every scaled figure and has no published derivation. It is also exactly one twentieth and one tenth of a 5 mg vial.

How long it lasts

Under 30 minutes, and that figure comes from animals. Nobody has measured how long it lasts in a person, by any route.

How to check you have the right molecule

Ask for the lab report that came with the batch and compare two things. The mass should come back at about 1,419 daltons, and the sequence should read GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, 15 amino acids long. Anything else is a different molecule. Even a clean report only proves what is in that one sample, and FDA scientists testified in 2026 that quality standards for this compound cannot be established, listing peptide impurities and poor characterization of the active ingredient among the reasons it was flagged.

What people get wrong

The standard 250 to 500 mcg daily figure is not a research finding. It appears in no published study in any species, and those two amounts happen to be exactly one twentieth and one tenth of the 5 mg bottle it is sold in, which are the easiest marks to read on a syringe.

What is known about harm

No side effects have been documented in people, because no proper study has ever looked. A 2025 review that searched thirty years of literature concluded plainly that no clinical safety data were found, so long term safety at any dose is unknown. One theoretical worry follows from how it is supposed to work: it encourages new blood vessel growth, and nobody knows whether that is harmless in a person with an undiagnosed tumor.

BPC-157 is sold in 5 mg vials. Mixing errors put people an order of magnitude off using a perfectly good vial, and the arithmetic is simple enough to check yourself.
