Buying Peptides Without Getting Ripped Off

When independent labs have tested what is actually being sold, the results have been worse than underdosed powder. In one set of samples there was no peptide in the vial at all.


Who this is for

You have read enough to decide you want to try something. Maybe it is BPC-157 for a shoulder, maybe it is a GLP-1 for weight. You have found six vendors, their websites look broadly identical, and the prices differ by a factor of three.

Nothing on this page argues for or against taking anything. That decision is yours and it belongs in the entries on each compound. This is about the part that goes wrong even when the decision was fine: what actually arrives in the box.

What the testing has actually found

Most sourcing advice assumes the failure mode is a weak product. Somebody cuts the peptide, you get 70 percent of what you paid for, you are annoyed. The published testing does not look like that.

Two numbers wrong in opposite directions. Researchers bought semaglutide from three online sellers in 2024 and had it independently analysed. Purity came back at 14.37, 8.97 and 7.7 percent against 99 percent advertised. So far, the expected story. But the amount of actual semaglutide in those vials was 28.6 to 38.7 percent HIGHER than the label claimed. (PMID 39509151)

The powder was mostly other material, and there was still more drug in it than advertised. Somebody dosing off that label would be overdosing while believing they were being careful. The researchers' own stated concern was accidental overdose, not underdosing. That is the opposite of the street wisdom.

All three samples also contained bacterial toxin, and against 22 standard pharmacy quality criteria they failed 13 and 14 of them.

Vials with nothing in them. A racing testing laboratory analysed a batch of substances sold as TB-500. Many contained no thymosin beta-4 or any peptide derived from it. Most contained no proteins, peptides or amino acids whatsoever. Exactly one sample contained the molecule on the label.

That is not a quality problem. A quality problem is a peptide that came back at 92 percent. This is a jar of something else with a peptide's name printed on it.

A separate published analysis of TB500 products bought over the internet found their contents were not systematically consistent with their descriptions. (PMID 36482504)

None of this means every vendor is doing this. It means the range of outcomes is wider than most people buying assume, and that the label is not evidence of anything.

The four checks

All four are free, all four take about a minute, and any vendor who cannot survive them has told you something.

1. Is there a certificate for your batch, and does the number match your vial?

Not a certificate. A certificate for the specific lot that is in the box. A perfect report for lot RETA10-0616 tells you nothing about the vial in your hand if your vial says something else.

This is the check almost nobody actually performs, and it is the one that matters most, because a recycled certificate costs a dishonest vendor nothing. A certificate for a different batch is a photograph of a meal somebody else ate.

2. Does it report content, not just purity?

Purity is what proportion of the powder is the peptide. Content, sometimes called assay, is how many milligrams are actually in the vial. They are different questions and a vendor can pass one while failing the other badly, which is exactly what happened in the semaglutide analysis above.

A report that gives you a purity percentage and no content figure has answered the easier question and skipped the one that determines your dose. 3. Does the molecular weight match what you ordered?

This is the check that catches the substitution nobody notices, because the wrong molecule can be perfectly pure.

The clearest example is TB-500. What is sold under that name has a molecular weight of about 889. Thymosin beta-4, which vendors routinely claim is the same thing, is about 4,963. Five and a half times heavier. If a seller tells you those are interchangeable, their own certificate settles the argument against them.

Look up the accepted weight for the compound you ordered, then look at the number on the report. A gap of a fraction of a Dalton is normal instrument tolerance. A gap of a whole Dalton or more is a different molecule.

4. Can you do the reconstitution math before it arrives?

This one is not about the vendor. It is about the most common way people get hurt with a perfectly legitimate vial.

Reconstitution errors put people off their intended dose by a factor of ten, in either direction, and the syringe markings do not measure what most people assume they measure. If you cannot confidently say how many units on an insulin syringe correspond to your intended dose, work that out before the package arrives rather than at the kitchen table with a needle in your hand. What you cannot check

Being honest about the limits matters more than the checks, because a checklist creates a feeling of control that outruns what it actually buys you.

Sterility and endotoxin. You cannot assess either at home, by eye, at any price. All three semaglutide samples in that analysis carried bacterial toxin, and nothing about their appearance would have told you.

Whether the vial in your box is the vial the certificate describes. The certificate proves a lab tested something. The chain between that sample and your package is a matter of trust, and no document closes it.

What happened in transit. Storage and temperature history are invisible.

Whether it does anything. No certificate speaks to efficacy. A vial can be 99.8 percent pure, exactly on content, sterile, correctly identified, and still be a compound with no completed human trial behind it. That question lives in the individual entries, not here.

My take

The single most useful shift is to stop reading a certificate as a reassurance and start reading it as a claim that can be checked.

Most of what circulates as sourcing advice is about vendor reputation, which is a proxy, and a weak one. Reputation is downstream of who posts the most and who sponsors the loudest people. The four checks above are not a proxy. They are the thing itself, and they take a minute.

What I would not do is conclude from the testing above that everything on the market is fake. That is not what those studies show, and the sample sizes are small. What they show is that the outcome you get is not predictable from the website, the price, or how confident the copy sounds.

If you have ever had a vendor decline to give you a batch specific certificate, I would like to know what reason they gave. In my experience the reason is more revealing than the refusal.
